Jonathan D. Alvis, DMA

Dr. Jonathan D. Alvis is Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at Angelo State University where he directs the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Ram Band (marching band), oversees the entire band area, teaches classes in the music education curriculum, and is the Director of the Summer Music Camp. A native of Athens, WV, Alvis received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 2009 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a concentration in Trombone Performance with a secondary emphasis in Music Education where his primary teachers were Dr. Randy Kohlenberg (trombone) and Dr. John Locke (conducting). He also received the Master of Music degree from UNCG in 2007 and the Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Concord University (Athens, WV) in fall of 2004. Prior to Angelo State, Alvis was a member of the faculty at the University of South Dakota, Concord University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

 

Students under Alvis’ mentorship have a proven record of success with nearly 100% gaining employment as music teachers or successfully continuing their education at prestigious graduate schools across the country. Under his direction, the Ram Band has received invitations to march at the Texas UIL State Marching Championships, the prestigious London, England New Year’s Day Parade, and, most recently, the Rome, Italy New Year’s Day Parade, all firsts in program history. Alvis is in high demand as a conductor, consultant, clinician, arranger, and drill writer across the United States.
